European(including UK) Intenship

Hi

I’ve applied for the EURES EYE scheme which supports paid placements abroad. With this I would be able to take an unpaid internship outside Ireland which up to this point I simply haven’t been able to afford. This is very exciting but I have to find a game studio first.

The  scheme is for 6 to 12 months starting September/October. I should be getting some money from the scheme so I will be asking no money from the company.

If you’re interest , here is a little about me, I am a game programmer with a degree in computer games development.I love playing and making games. I am very hard working and eager to grow as a programmer and learn more.I am interested in going to new places sadly English is my only language but I am very willing to try and learn a new language.

For more information on projects please look at my portfolio on this website

cheers

Glow – Sprint 1

Quick update on a kids game I am coding.

Glow it a project being made in our spare time but I decided for me it would be better to treat it as much like a work project as I can and start doing sprints. So I  started using git hub even though I’m the only coder it really is better and a good habit to get into. In university we had used Jira to track issues and bugs, since it’s just me I stared my using post it notes but they just fell down a lot now I  am using yodiz, it’s free for teams up to 3 .I really recommend it, it’s free easy to use and has everything you need.

I just finished Sprint one. I mainly worked on UI, honestly I am a logic code person so UI is not my strong point. I started the sprint by updating my project  to unity 5 , much to my surprise the update went well and everything worked.Unity 5 has a whole new UI system, I actually like it a lot more then the old one but there isn’t as much help online. So after some swearing and reading the unity manual on designing UI for multiple resolutions about 20 times, I am happy with the positioning on the Android devices I was able to test on(so far). The next big thing was the controls I had joystick controls but after feedback from people it was clear the joystick was not right. So we now  have a d-pad, It works pretty well but will need from feedback from tester to see.

I will be starting my next sprint next week after a get feedback on sprint one. I am looking forward to sprint 2 as will be back to doing more coding, gonna work on the enemy AI, which will be  fun(when it works )and horrible(when it doesn’t work).

Will do another update as soon as I can

Honours Degree

Hi

I wanted to write a post about the difference between what a  honours degree means in different countries .Having recently competed a Honours Bachelor of Science in computer games development in Ireland I am looking to start my career in the industry. My main search for work is in Ireland and the UK, the thing is my degree means different things in each countries.

I wanted to write this post to clear up a few things for employers and follow graduates.

While all Course’s will have different subjects In Ireland and Scotland an honors degree is 4 years and in England and wales it is 3 years.Similarly a ordinary degree  is 3 years and two years.

In Ireland  the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) is used to compare and contrast the   level and standard of different qualifications. For example in Ireland a honours bachelor degree is a level eight , in Scotland it is a level 10 and in England , Wales and northern Ireland it is a level 6 so it’s important to be aware of the different levels used to measure qualifications.

I got this information  from a leaflet by  the UK and Ireland qualifications authorities to help cross reference the qualifications frameworks in the UK and Ireland . It  is really useful and can be found in PDF form here.

As for grading of degrees it is very similar with 1st , 2:1 and 2:2 all meaning the same thing except in Ireland between 40% and 50% of a Honours Degree is a known as a Pass while in the UK it is a 3rd.

I hope this was helpfully, please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions to make this post better.

cheers
